An example I often think of in this vein is The Rapture, when all the saved people will be taken instantly to heaven. This was the subject of the hugely successful "Left Behind" books. I keep thinking, if someone believed that was going to happen, there'd be no impetus to improve the world. What would the point be? Whenever an ideology devalues evidence, it can lead to misery.
